controversy and compassion

Bold claims spark a lot of debate and criticism.
Is the gospel of Jesus Christ, and all the truths that it entails, a bold claim? It depends on who you ask, but many would say that yes, it is. Saving grace? Infinite mercy? Loving Savior? Eternal life?
Bold, indeed.

Our church gets a lot of attention. "Mormons" are starting to be nationally and even, in some places, globally recognized, especially in recent years.
Are we nationally - even globally - positively being recognized? Ha. Not even close.

We are even - and here's what I am kind of trying to address - bombarded with criticism, anger, and doubt coming from our own members.
Some believe women are being oppressed in our church. "Ordain women!" They cry.
Some believe we ought to be more accepting toward the gay community. "Equality for all!" They cry.
And there's more. These are just a couple of the biggest ones, but my point is that there's controversy and doubt surrounding our lovely church.

Look, I don't care where you stand on ordaining women or gay rights or any of the other stuff. These subjects are complicated and touchy because we simply don't understand God and His eternal plans. And, quite frankly, we don't always understand our fellow humans and their internal struggles, and we aren't always very willing to try.
We know where the church stands, but sometimes we struggle. Doubts creep in and we dwell and we dwell until sometimes we don't know what to believe.

I don't think we can ever truly understand God and why He does what He does, at least not while on this earth.
We try to make sense of it. But we all make sense of it in different ways, which I think causes problems sometimes. For example, I know some people quite personally who hope for a day when women will be ordained. Do I hope for that? No. But I do understand that for some people, this is a real desire and a real struggle, and I try to at least acknowledge that and try to understand and reach out to them.

Here's what I'm getting at, really: We're all different. We all have different opinions, and even within the church, some of us are going to disagree on doctrine and believe different things.
If we could put on some sort of goggles that made it so we could suddenly see all things with God's perfect understanding and wisdom, that would be great. That would undoubtedly clear some things up. But unfortunately, that isn't possible. We are just going to have to trust and have faith and wait patiently and faithfully for the day when we will see all things as He sees them.

In the meantime, let us be understanding of and compassionate toward our brothers and sisters who struggle and who believe different things than us. None of us have a perfect knowledge. None of us have perfect lives, and some of us believe in or hope for things that another person may not be able to understand or relate to.
It's all part of the human experience, my friends. We aren't perfect, and we aren't the same.

But here's what I think we can all agree on:
God is good. He is over all, and He knows what He's doing. Jesus Christ is full of grace and mercy, and he understands and loves each and every one of us.
I think we can all say that we love our family and our friends and that we want to be with them forever.
I think we can all say that we love the gospel.

The gospel is amazing, friends. And the church is amazing, too. It's run by and made up of imperfect people, but somehow it works.
And it will continue to work and be an incredible vehicle for Christ's gospel, so long as we continue to support and love one another.

So until Christ comes again, until we actually have a perfect knowledge and understanding, praise God. Because even with all the turmoil and controversy that's in the world - and even in the church, sometimes - God never changes.
No matter what I struggle with, no matter what turmoil I have in my life, I will sing praises until I die. I have so many reasons to. God is so good to me, and so good to us all.

So don't get caught up in little doubts and troubles. The gospel is good. It's true. It's simple

"Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me,
Let me be singing when the evening comes."

He GIVES and TAKES AWAY.

Job 1:21: "...the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

So the Lord gives and the Lord takes away.
But wait. Does God ever really take away?
True, to us it would sometimes appear that He does.

Sometimes it feels like there is more bad than good in our lives.
Sometimes we are bombarded with trial after trial, and it can be hard to praise God when your life feels like it's falling apart.

But God's ways are higher than ours. God has a different perspective than we do. Is a loss to us always a loss in the grand scheme of things?

No. It isn't.

Many wonder, "how can there be a God if bad things happen to good people?"
Friends, God does everything for a reason. We can't always see what the reason is, but I promise that we become better people through our trials.
One day, after our earth life is long over and we have a much better perspective, we will understand why God does what He does.

I praise a God who GIVES me so many amazing things. My family and my heart and my emotions. I praise a God who gives beauty and love so freely. I praise a God who gives life.

And still, I will praise a God who TAKES AWAY. A God who is omnipotent and a God who sees all. I will praise Him when times get hard, because I know that He is mighty to save. I know that He knows what He is doing.

So can we worship a God who would let bad things happen? A God who would let people be taken from the earth early, a God who would let us feel sorrow sometimes?
Absolutely.

I will praise Him, my friend and my teacher. He always knows best.
He understands things that I never could.

Remember that all things will eventually work together for our good.

So join with me in lifting my hands always to the God who gives and takes away.

Alleluia

First thing is first: I am now the proud owner of a lovely new domain name! You can now visit my blog via www.whatmattersmostblog.com. If you enter in the old URL, you will still be redirected, but I think this address will be easier to find me at and easier to share with others. Oh, and I'm still working out the bugs, so make sure you include the "www." I'm trying to fix it so that it isn't necessary, but for now it is.
Domain names are complicated stuff, I tell you. I've already chatted with experts online, and I still can't fix the problem. But everything else is working, so I'll take it! A stubborn www. could be worse. :)

Alma 26:16:
Therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the Lord; yea, we will rejoice, for our joy is full; yea, we will praise our God forever. Behold, who can glory too much in the Lord? Yea, who can say too much of his great power, and of his mercy, and of his long-suffering towards the children of men? Behold, I say unto you, I cannot say the smallest part which I feel.

Make everything you do about praising God.
Make everything you are about praising God.

When you do good for others, make it about God.
When others see your good works, they should be praising God, not you!

God gave us everything. He is the reason you exist, the reason you feel joy. He is the reason for everything that's beautiful in life. Remember to thank Him for it!

Praise Him in all things. Praise Him at morning and at night. During joy or during pain. Show Him that you are grateful for what you have, even if you feel like you don't have much.

I promise that praising God at all times will make you a happier, more grateful, and more lovely person. Praising God will keep you humble and will help you to remember whom to go to when you need help.
Praising God will become a habit, and soon enough, it will be second nature to you. And it will not be hard for you to praise Him when times get tough.

There is a being greater than you. Greater than me. There is a God greater than the whole earth, even greater than any wonderful thing you could ever dream up.
There is a God above, I know it. He is capable of anything. He can help you turn sorrow into joy and regret into peace. He can help you feel fulfilled and loved. He can perform miracles, and He can help you to do the same.

Do not take Him for granted. Do not forget Him. Show Him what He means to you by remembering to praise Him in all things. And try as hard as you can to emulate Him and radiate His love so that others will lift up their praises as well.

I absolutely adore this song, and I love the way it is presented in this video. And it gets even better at 6:45.

Yes, if there are words for Him, I simply don't have them.
I could never say the smallest part of what I feel.

But this I know: He is mine. He is yours. He is omnipotent, and He is perfect.

And I will praise Him in all things.

can ye feel so now?

Alma 5:26 - And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?

If the Holy Ghost has prompted you to become better in your life,
Can ye feel so now?

If you have felt Christ's love wash over you,
Can ye feel so now?

If you have felt the cleansing power of the Atonement, I ask,
Can ye feel so now?

Our lives are always changing. I am not the same person I was when I was in seventh grade, I'm not even the person I was last year, or last week, for that matter.
Sometimes we grow and become stronger, sometimes we regress, and sometimes things just change in other ways. Many changes aren't good or bad necessarily, they are just changes.
Life is always changing.

But one thing that should never change is your testimony. Your conviction and your knowledge of what is right should never waver.

Have you ever had a change of heart?
It wears off sometimes.

I mean, not to a downer, but it just does. Not always, I think all of us have experiences that change us and sometimes there is no going back.
But other times, well, it is hard to remember how the Spirit made you feel, or it is hard to remember why you decided to do what you did.

Think back on times that you felt the Spirit, times when your knowledge was sure.
Can ye feel so now?

Has Christ called upon you to sing the song of redeeming love? Have you felt those moments when you just want to shout from the rooftops: "Christ lives! He is Lord!"
Can ye feel so now?

Let us always be strong and faithful, remembering the times the Spirit has whispered the truth to us.
Keep your testimony strong always.

Have a good week!

Haley
